Special Projects

  • Find out more

Our latest project the -Tiwi Islands Pontoon and Welcome Centre- has seen us work with another Indigenous Company from Western Australia, Carey MC, who specialise in constructions in marine environments, to deliver a safe and functional landing and mooring area at the Wurrumiyanga foreshore and on the Paru foreshore.   The concept for this project originated with discussions in 2014 between the Department of The Chief Minister, Northern Territory Government, Tiwi Land Council, Tiwi Enterprises, Mantiyupwi Family Trust and SeaLink. This led to numerous community consultations which gave their overwhelming support for this project.  Funding was sought and was successful with the Northern Territory Government, providing the initial fund to kick start the beginning of the project.  This was followed by the Aboriginals Benefit Account (ABA), Building Better regions Fund (BBRF) providing the majority of the funds for the construction phase with contributions from the Tiwi Land Council and Tiwi Enterprises as well.  Eighty five percent of the project has acquisitions were made in the Northern Territory, the only items purchased from Asia being the piles, which due to there size we were unable to source from Australia. We have used over 4,000 man hours of labour provided by our local Tiwi staff, used local businesses such as Bathurst Island Housing Association and other trades from Darwin to get this project to practical completion.

The Welcome Centre, built in conjunction with the Pontoon, this has a kiosk and takeaway area, bathroom including disabled facilities, store room and a shaded seating area for waiting travellers.  A local Tiwi Island artist has been commissioned to paint artwork on the internal walls depicting the landscape and local artefacts and beliefs showcasing the traditions of the Tiwi People.

The official opening is scheduled to be held on the 30th of January 2020 and will be a day of celebration for the Tiwi People.
